October Is National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month
On October 1, 2008 Congress declared October as “National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month.”
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is unpredictable, often striking people who have had no previous symptoms. It can happen anytime, anywhere, to anyone. These deaths occur in all ages, genders, ethnicities and geographic areas.
Cardiac arrest is generally only reversible in victims if action is taken in the first 5-7 minutes. The victim requires immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to restore blood flow to the brain and the shock of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to restore the heart’s natural rhythm.
The average response time to an emergency call is rarely under six minutes. As a result, reports estimate that nearly 95 percent of all people who experience SCA die before reaching the hospital.
Having automated external defibrillators (AEDs) accessible in schools and places of public gathering increases an SCA victim’s chance of survival.
When SCA strikes, seconds mean the difference between life and death. With each minute of elapsed time before defibrillation, the survival rate of the victim diminishes by approximately 10 percent.
What can You do?
Take a CPR/AED class and get certified. If You perform CPR immediately and use an Automated
External Defibrillator within a few minutes, you can double or triple the victim’s chance of survival.
CPR can delay brain damage for a few minutes, but SCA victims need a defibrillation shock to
correct the hearts abnormal rhythm.
